4 Steps to Keep Your Melanated Skin in Healthy Throughout Colder Months

Seasons may change, but the health of your skin certainly does not need to! As the weather grows colder it’s important to adjust your skin care routine accordingly. Cold air is more dry and contains less humidity. The threats to skin health do not stop there. You are also spending more time in heated indoor environments which can dry you out even more. We all have faith that black don’t crack, but that does not mean we should take our naturally radiant skin for granted.

Here are some important steps to shield your skin from the bitter cold:

  1. Exfoliate - Low temperatures and humidity levels lead to increased water loss, this is how your skin looses moisture. There have been studies conducted that concluded this process actually occurs faster in black skin, causing you to lose your glow rather quickly. Skin needs the right balance to regulate itself and it can be hard to maintain that naturally during colder months. Finding the right exfoliant can help get rid of dead skin cells and promote cellular rejuvenation. Our Cocoa Sugar Creamy Body Polish is the ideal exfolient. Sugar crystals gently remove dead skin cells as shae and cacao butters sooth the skin’s surface with healing anti-inflammatory properties.
  2. Moisturize daily. Some people recommend switching to petroleum or cream based moisturizers during the colder months. The issue with applying those kinds of products, also known as paraffins, is that they actually create a waterproof layer on top of skin. This can cause breakouts and actually prevent the skin from breathing in moisture naturally. The right moisturiser will protect the skin by providing a barrier of long lasting hydration that also allows the skin to breath. Our lotions and creams are vegan and completely non-toxic. Instead of relying on paraffins, petroleum, mineral oils, we use natural oils, aloe vera, shea butter, and cacao butter, which naturally provide 24 hours of hydration.
  3. Cleanse - but don’t overdo it. Cleansing too intensely can offset the skin’s equilibrium. With that said, it is important to cleanse and remove debris that your skin comes into contact with and sweat that accumulates throughout the day. Finding the right cleanser is essential. Using all-natural products can stop you from feeling dried out after cleansing. No matter if you are cleansing sensitive skin, removing makeup, or need an all natural paraben-free body soap, we’ve got you covered!Face Off Oil Cleanser & Makeup Remover Pictured
  4. PROTECT. You absolutely cherish your skin, so why would you believe anyone when they say melanated skin doesn’t need protecting? It is so important to apply sunscreen all year round. Our So Sensitive Rose Moisturiser contains a soothing blend of broad spectrum SPF 20 for light coverage that prevents the look of dullness and helps to decrease pigmentation issues that can be exacerbated by cold climates.
